Financing Telecomix pt. 2

Because of recent events I — and several others, it seems — saw fit to revisit my old(ish) post on how to finance an organization like Telecomix. Written in the backwash of the egyptian campaign I find it a bit naïve, but still a solid argument. But, of course, reality wouldn’t let me have my way. It’s always just not that easy.

I won’t even try to write about what’s been going on lately. Those of you who know already know and those of you who don’t will have to wait until I (or someone else) has made sense of it all. Suffice to say, it has become very very necessary to draw up an official financial policy for Telecomix. In the words of Nancy Reagan: JUST SAY NO.

Telecomix will never, ever deal with money again. To emphasize, Flattr buttons will be removed network-wide and other changes will be made to drive that message home.

However, I’m not against organizations that ask for funding, nor against those that offer it. I absolutely love the EFF, the Gentoo Foundation, Kickstarter and Flattr. Even though I have my doubts about the current monetary system (and some of the experimental future ones as well…) it is a useful tool for transferring value. And I recognize that activism and advocacy does need money. So why not have people take, and give out, money?

Just not under the name Telecomix. Like someone recently put it, ideas don’t take money. They can’t. But other organizations are forming, and have formed, that can.

Diversification rather than monoculture; the activist internaut jellyfish is growing!

~~~=:)
[In the interest of disclosure, I am a pretty active participant in the Telecomix network and also involved in one of the aforementioned emerging financing organizations. I have never made a single penny off of my activism and I most likely never will. While I have a Flattr button on this blog, I wouldn't if all I ever wrote about was activism.]
    I noticed the bitcoin thing as well. Hypocrite much? It’s just too bad that this hypocrisy abounds from a certain [name redacted] while allowing slander to rein supreme. Trust psycho liar Ms. [name redacted] at your peril. You should be ashamed of yourselves for harming those that are trying to do good in this world.
      I don’t believe we take bitcoins anymore. Personally I have no recollection of TCX ever having done so. Anyhow, since noone seems to be responsible for “our” BTC wallet I call scam. Anyone claiming to be TCX and asking for donations is lying, unless a specific project is indicated as the recipient of said donations. There. Easy enough right?
      Incidentally, I redacted the names mentioned in your post.
    Of course you would. You still know. You will know the truth soon enough. You’ve been warned.
    Of course you would. You still know and you will know the truth soon enough. You’ve been warned. It will happen to you as well, mark these words for your own benefit.
    Also, it would be wise when one has no “personal” recollection to confirm whether it is or is not so that bitcoins are or are not accepted prior to making a public statement asserting that it is not the case. Not a very affirmative way to business.
      Just a clarification, since you seem to be slow on the uptake: Telecomix don’t “business.”
      We never have done any form of business and we never will. We don’t even run an organization, for crying out loud. Or at least we try not to. Anyhow, no logs are saved and personal recollections are all that we have. Deal with it.
      (FYI I did som digging and while we are/were listed on bitcoin.org as accepting donations in BTC that page links/linked to http://werebuild.eu/wiki/Donations and that’s that.)
      Now can you concentrate on running your own org and stop being butthurt about TCX having asked for donations at a time when it seemed neccessary and possible (which it turned out not to be)?
    I’m only disappointed that an “ephemeral” entity known as “Telecomix”, that I once thought was trying to do good, turns out to be nothing but an “entity” that allows lies to perpetuate about good people based upon the lunatic ravings of a very, very sad woman. I don’t run any orgs. I’m not part of any orgs – Just a formerly interested outside observer. You’ve done much harm to your reputation. Too bad. So much good could have been achieved. – I can deal with it all perfectly fine. It seems you are not capable of the same. No, of course, you don’t do “business”, I wonder where at that flattr money and bitcoins went, Hmm. TCX should really show some integrity and transparency and show those that donated exactly where that money went. Was it all really just for cool stickers?
      There’s a bunch of money stuck in the flattr account that we are trying do come up with a way to use. Unlike some we will however not buy games. More like Airvpn coupons, or maybe push everything into a promising project on kickstarter. But, yeah, basically we have never withdrawn money from Flattr.
      Somewhere there’s a wallet with 0,1 BTC or something like that. I’m sure that will be valuable once bitcoin really takes off and the economy starts growing. (I actually managed to type that with a straight face!)
    And I’m done here. Bigger and better things on the horizon….
